We represent federal employees and former federal employees in disability retirement matters. When disability retirement applications are filed with the Office of Personnel Management (OPM), the waiting times for approval can vary, generally between two and six months. Processing times vary at OPM given personnel shortages, increased applications and other factors. According to one recent article by Fedsmith, OPM has been falling behind in processing times for all retirements. Notwithstanding, when OPM completes processing, successful applicants will be notified of their disability retirement approval. In its approval notice, OPM generally provides information about payment, restoration to capacity issues, and other important information for disability retirement retirees. Attached is a sample letter of what a federal employee or former federal employee might expect to receive from OPM when successful in filing for disability retirement with OPM.
